United around the Gospel

Posted: March 12, 2011 in Uncategorized

I often hear people say they want or wish all of the churches and Christians could just get together. I ask why? Often, the typical answer is so we can all be united. Some think we need to get together for a massive worship gathering and when it’s over go back to our separate churches, but that doesn’t make us united. The thing that unites us is the Gospel. If we are presenting the Gospel then we are united around the main thing. I celebrate and appreciate our diversity in the body of Christ and we are on the same team, if Christ is the center. God has called me and Riverwoods church to reach the un-churched, and that means putting our energy and efforts toward that end. The amount of time, energy and resources it would take to get a large group of believers together if refocused could impact the unchurched in a huge way.

My mentor taught me to focus on the harvest. Jesus said in (Matt 22:37-38) “The harvest is great but the worker’s are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.” For too long the church have become keepers of the aquarium, focusing on themselves. Jesus told the story about a king who said (Luke 14:21, 23)”. . .’Go quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and invite the poor, the crippled, the blind, the lame.’. . .’Go out into the country lanes and behind the hedges and urge anyone you can find to come, so that my house might be full.’” My prayer is God just let us reach the ones no one else wants. Man I don’t have time, passion, or energy to focus on getting a bunch of Christians together for a pep rally. People are dying and they need a savior! If getting a bunch of believers together is your thing I am for you, I encourage you, but please understand it’s not my calling. Someone told me today the reason they wanted to get churches and Christians united was so we would be a strong enough voice to solve political issues in our society. As believers we should be concerned and active, but honestly, Jesus did not call us to straighten everything out. In fact, if I understand the scripture correctly it is just going to get worse and worse. The ship is going down and we need to rescue as many passengers as we can. Politics is not going to straighten out America. This world’s only hope is Jesus! What the world needs is the Gospel, the good news, for the captives to be set free.

My prayer is to the Lord of the harvest to send laborers to work in his field. New churches are the most effective evangelistic tool on planet earth. The goal is to reach the unchurched and disciple them and send them out to do the same thing. I want to get a bunch of believer’s together but it’s to impact the unchurched with the Gospel. If we just get on the trail of a lost and dying world we will be united.
